My mother likes piano and even though she never had the opportunity as a child to learn to play, she gave me the opportunity. After my first lesson, I came home with a piece of paper with piano keys printed on it, taking up the entire sheet. My first practice sessions were on a paper piano and I didn’t mind it. The teacher I had, helped me find a second hand piano that I will be reuniting with tomorrow!
I stopped classical music training after RCM level 8, receiving First Class Honors, when I went to university. I wanted to focus on my science studies, while minoring in Japanese. Piano lessons started again for me in March 2017. It was then that I learned to appreciate classical music. I began to take piano seriously and even bought a digital piano to practice with headphones on while my family was asleep. Learning to play brought me joy.
After less than two years, I began teaching. During high school, I had taught piano at a music school and at the time, it didn’t occur to me that I would pursue it as a career. Besides teaching my own students, I was hired at another music school. Even though I had to stop teaching at the school due to the pandemic, I was able to continue teaching my own students virtually. I’ve since obtained my certificate for The Royal Music Conservatory’s Teaching Elementary Piano course. Throughout my teaching career, it has been an honour to help students as young as four up to adults in their music journey. I believe playing piano requires work and is a lot of fun! For some, it can be a method of stress relief or healing as well 🙂
